The same study also found that PEMF helped the cells survive better, activating important cell survival pathways (like Akt and Ras) in a way that depended on how strong and how long the exposure was.

Another study looked at how different PEMF frequencies affect these stem cells when they’re encouraged to become bone cells. It found that higher frequencies—especially 50 Hz—were more effective at nudging the cells toward becoming osteoblasts (bone-building cells). So, the higher the frequency (within the tested range), the stronger the effect on bone-related development.

One well-designed clinical study looked at the effects of PEMF therapy over 12 weeks in people with high blood pressure. Thirty participants were split into two groups: one got PEMF treatment three times a day, and the other didn’t. After the 12 weeks, the PEMF group saw real improvements:

  • Better flow-mediated dilation (a fancy way of saying their blood vessels functioned better)
  • Lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure
  • Reduced mean arterial pressure

In plain terms? Their hearts didn’t have to work as hard, and their blood vessels were in better shape.

The researchers concluded that PEMF can improve both blood pressure and vascular function—particularly in people with hypertension.

Why does this happen? The study suggests PEMF may help the lining of your blood vessels (called the endothelium) work more efficiently. That’s key, because when endothelial function improves, blood pressure often follows.

One study tested a PEMF wrist device worn for 4 hours a day over two months. People in the PEMF group showed improvement in certain types of pain—especially deep, nerve-related pain—and some nerve function markers. But there was no real improvement in overall pain scores or hand function.

Another study, using rPMS (a different form of magnetic stimulation, related to PEMF) found no difference at all between people who got real treatment and those who got a fake one. And while another observational study (where everyone knew they were getting treatment) reported pain relief and less tingling, that kind of evidence is less trustworthy.

However, researchers think PEMF might work by affecting how nerves send signals or by reducing inflammation (#2 – Proven). It likely creates tiny electrical currents in the tissues, which could help reset nerve activity—but that’s still a theory.

There’s one small clinical trial (Pelka et al., 2002) that looked directly at PEMF for erectile dysfunction.

It was double-blind and placebo-controlled—which is great—and showed that 80% of men in the treatment group reported improvements in erection strength, duration, and overall well-being. That’s compared to just 30% in the placebo group. No side effects were reported. Sounds impressive, right?

But here’s the catch: it was a tiny study with only 20 participants. That means the results are interesting, but far from conclusive.

A few other reports and pilot studies hint at similar benefits, but most of them lack proper controls or are too small to take seriously. So, while the idea isn’t out of left field, the research just isn’t strong enough yet.
