Welcome to my review of the Hooga PEMF Mat. A 73-inch PEMF mat for under $800 is the kind of thing that makes me stop and look. Not because I’m after the cheapest mat out there, but because real value is pretty rare in this market.

The Hooga PEMF Mat caught my eye because there’s nothing flashy about it. No big marketing, no celebrities, just solid specs and a price that makes sense. Six coils, 10 Gauss, and a three-year warranty I’d call decent. Sometimes the brands that talk the least deliver the most, and the big question is what they cut to get there.

1-50HzPEMF Frequency Range

PEMF frequency is how many times per second the magnetic field goes through a full cycle, and it’s measured in hertz. The Hooga PEMF Mat runs from 1 to 50 Hz. That’s a wide range, and good technology, so you have more treatments and conditions open to you than with a basic mat.

10GaussPEMF Intensity

PEMF intensity is the strength of the magnetic field the mat puts out, and it’s measured in gauss. The Hooga PEMF Mat goes up to 10 Gauss. That’s a medium-low intensity, which is where the treatment starts to get more effective.

6PEMF Coils

A coil is a loop of copper wire built into the mat, the piece of hardware that makes the pulsed field once the controller drives it. The count tells you about coverage rather than power: more coils don’t make a mat stronger, they spread the field more evenly over the surface, so you get a similar effect wherever you lie.

The Hooga controller lets you set frequency, session time and heat. And it has a well-designed set of preset programs, so it’s easy to get started. Sadly there’s no way to build your own program or save your settings, but for this price, you still have a fair degree of control over your session.

My FInal verdict

The Hooga PEMF Mat stands out for the price, without giving up the essentials. It doesn’t lead in any one area, but when you look at the spec sheet and the therapies list you realize that Hooga is up to something. This mat comes with a variety of preset programs and functions that are uncommon at this price range. It’s one of the most balanced options for budget-conscious buyers looking to explore PEMF therapy.
What you give up is on the accessory side. It’s a bag and nothing else, and I would have liked a cover. The 3-year warranty and the 60-day returns make up for some of that.
All in all, what you get for the price makes this mat an exceptional value, and one of the best options out there if you want to try PEMF therapy on a budget.

The main thing that sets the Hooga PEMF Mat apart is the price. You get a full-size 73 x 29 inch mat with six PEMF coils, 10 Gauss of intensity and a 1 to 50 Hz range, plus far infrared heat, negative ions and a layer of crushed amethyst and tourmaline, at a price that not many full-size mats get anywhere near. Where it falls short is the extras. The bag is the only accessory, there is no cover, and Hooga keeps quiet about a couple of numbers, like the ion output and the waveform.

Yes, Hooga is a legitimate brand, and I’ve had no reason to doubt them. They back the mat with a 3-year warranty and a 60-day return policy, they publish the user manual, and the mat is HSA/FSA eligible. That’s not the behavior of a brand that’s here today and gone tomorrow. The specs they publish are also plain and clear: six coils, 10 Gauss, 1 to 50 Hz, with no inflated claims around them. They do, but only for some things, and less than the marketing would have you believe. The strongest evidence is for bone. PEMF devices have been used for decades on fractures that refuse to heal, and that’s the one use with a long track record. There’s also decent research on pain, especially from osteoarthritis and after surgery. For most of the other claims you’ll read online, from detox to weight loss, the studies are small, weak or missing altogether. So a mat like the Hooga can help you with pain and recovery, but it’s not a cure for everything.

It depends on what you’re treating, and there’s no single number that works for everything. Different conditions call for different frequencies and different session lengths, which is why the Hooga has 8 preset programs instead of one. Each pairs a frequency with a time, from 20 minutes at 7.83 Hz to a mix of 21, 14.4 and 7.83 Hz in the same session, and since the mat runs from 1 to 50 Hz, most of the frequencies you’ll find on a chart are covered. As a rule, most brands suggest sessions of 20 to 30 minutes, once or twice a day. That’s a starting point, not a prescription.

It can, and sleep is one of the more common reasons people buy a mat like this. The idea is to run a low frequency program in the evening, since the low end of the range is the one usually associated with rest, and the Hooga goes all the way down to 1 Hz. You can put the mat under your mattress or simply lie on top of it for a session before bed, and the gentle heat from the far infrared helps you wind down as well. Just don’t expect a miracle after the first night.

There’s research behind PEMF for osteoporosis, and bone is actually the area where PEMF has the longest track record. Studies have found that pulsed magnetic fields can help bone density, with results that vary from one study to the next. That said, a mat is not a replacement for your medication or for the exercise and diet your doctor recommends, so treat it as an addition and talk to your doctor before you change anything. A full-size mat like the Hooga does have one advantage here, since it lets you treat the hips and the spine at the same time instead of one spot at a time.
